Karin (Chibi Vampire)

Synopsis

Maaka Karin comes from a family of vampires living in Japan, but she is not a normal vampire. Vampires are normally supposed to drink the blood of their victims...but Karin suffers from a condition that causes her body to produce excessive amounts of blood. About once a month, she has to get rid of the excess blood by giving it to her "victims." But she somehow manages...she goes to school like everyone else her age.

Well, things are about to get more complicated. When a new student, Usui Kenta transfers into Karin`s class, she starts producing unusually huge amounts of blood, almost as if in reaction to him. Worse, he happens upon Karin`s...true nature...

The protagonist of the show. Karin is a "blood-producing" vampire (in Japanese, 増血鬼 ("zōketsuki") — literally "haematopoietic demon"); rather than needing to acquire blood from humans, her body produces too much blood instead (polycythemia). To make matters worse, her blood levels increase dramatically whenever she senses unhappiness in those around her, or if she gets embarrassed about something. This results in frequent nosebleeds, followed by anemic symptoms such as light-headedness, with cause frequent visits to the school nurses office so she can rest. She does not suck blood from her "victims"; rather, she injects her surplus into them instead. This has the effect of making her victims very lively and positive.

Kenta Usui

Kenta Usui is a student that transferred to Karin's high school. He is also her workmate. Kenta is the only human that knows of Karin's vampiric nature. He learned what she was after witnessing her biting three victims, one of which was his own mother. He has promised to keep this knowledge a secret. As his unhappiness causes Karin's blood to rapidly increase, she has taken it upon herself to cheer him up by making him a bento every day.


Anju Maaka



Anju is Karin's younger sister and she absolutely loves her, close to the point of possession. She has not quite awakened as a vampire though has amazing control over bats and because of that, she is obviously still somewhat sensitive to the sun, attending school on overcast days.
Anju is very reserved, speaking in a quiet manner and wears a Gothic Lolita attire. Boogie-kun is her companion, whom she carries around and is her favorite of her dolls, something she enjoys collecting. She will do anything for Karin.

Anju's blood preference is jealousy when she awakens.


Ren Maaka



Karin's handsome blue-haired older brother.

He a bit of a lounge lizard with an eye for the ladies, especially those who are stressed. Even though stress is his blood preference, he is often seen as a self-confessed pervert because he enjoys the other benefits he receives from encounters with his victims besides their blood.

He is scornful of Karin's condition and considers her to be almost a non-vampire, yet he is the one who takes her out and realizes that Karin's blood increases are due to the unhappiness of others. Ren usually will only bite women but Kenta, who in addition to being unhappy is very stressed, drives Ren crazy.
Ren's only fear is Elda Marker, who nearly killed him when he was four by smothering him with affection.


Winner Sinclair



IMPORTANT NOTE: Winner is an anime-only character and does NOT appear in the manga-verison.

A vampire hunter descended from a long line of hunters, Winner is very melodramatic, and his hunting garb is flamboyant: a black, flowing Neo-style long overcoat, with a white chest and a gold "W" plastered across the front, and a huge wide-brimmed hat with a feather sticking out of it. His blond good looks make him extremely popular with the girls at the school and his "cool" appearance is also commented on by passing strangers.

He transfers to Karin's high school and falls in love with her at first sight, constantly making romantic overtures toward her. Despite being a vampire hunter, he does not know about Karin's true nature, as he is blinded by love and possibly also because he is not very bright.
As a child, he met a girl with whom he shared his first kiss. However, the girl he "kissed" was (unknown to him at the time) actually a younger Karin, who bit him and injected her blood into him.

There is one massive stumbling block to Winner's progress as a vampire hunter, however: he has hemophobia (aka, a fear of blood), which goes as far as feeling sick when seeing spilt red paint.
